Virginia is a mid-Atlantic coastal state and one of the original thirteen colonies. It is one of four states that is officially designated as a commonwealth (the others being Kentucky, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania). Virginia was the first region of the what was to become the United States to be continuously inhabited by English colonists. Located halfway between New England and Florida, the state is often considered the gateway to the South.

Virginia is bordered to the north by West Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC, to the west by West Virginia and Kentucky, to the south by North Carolina and Tennessee, and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay. It is generally divided into eight distinct regions (from west to east): Heart of Appalachia, Blue Ridge Highlands, Shenandoah Valley, Northern, Central, Southern, Chesapeake Bay, and Hampton Roads. Most of the state is considered humid subtropical, changing to humid continental in and around the Blue Ridge Highlands. There are four distinct seasons.

Virginia has a well-balanced economy that includes tourism, agriculture, and high technology. Virginia Location in USThe northern region adjacent to Washington DC is also the home to large government installations, including the Pentagon.

Virginia is, by far, the largest state (in terms of population) without a major professional sports team despite various attempts to locate one in the state.
